For over 14 years members of the Congressional Black Caucus advocated for justice, freedom and equality in South Africa. Members introduced bills, organized rallies and participated in protests in opposition to the apartheid regime. On July 26th 1988, Representative Charles Rangel (NY-13) addressed the House of Representatives in an effort to gather support to toughen the sanctions against South Africa. The Anti- Apartheid Act Amendments H.R 1580 called for a comprehensive approach to the anti-apartheid movement and called for the United States to firmly oppose the blatant violations of human rights.
